Summary/authors notes: "Joe," he kept on, he was passed listening to me and I was passed caring. He had been pacing back and forth in the tiny space for the last ten minutes, muttering to himself, his hand running through his hair occasionally. "Joe," I repeated; no response. "Joe! ... JOE." He stopped in his tracks and spun around to face me. It was then that he gave me the dirtiest look I have ever received in my entire life. You would have thought I had just ripped his own life from his hands. I felt my jaw slacken and my eyes began to fill, I might as well have been slapped in the face. I closed my mouth, blinked my eyes, stood up and walked away, never glancing back to mentally capture a final picture of the face I loved. As soon as the door closed behind me, I heard glass being thrown against it, shattering: probably the vase of tulips which had been sitting beside me only moments before.
(Chapter One)
(Chapter Two)

I still had his jacket. I guess I’d forgotten to give it back or he’d forgotten to ask for it when he left. Either way, I still had it, still wore it, still slept in it. I’d gotten to the point where I honestly didn’t want to give him the jacket back for anything in the world. It was seriously the most comfortable thing I had EVER worn in my life, which is why I slept in it nightly. There was also the fact that it smelled absolutely intoxicating. I needed to find out what cologne Joe wore and buy that as soon as possible. I could give a sample to each of my guy friends so that I was constantly surrounded by the irreplaceable sweetness.

The boys were going to visit my family again in two weeks. With the way their tour was planned, they had a half day off. It conveniently fell so that they were staying the night at my house again. My mother couldn’t be more excited, her old friends were able to visit more and more often. Oh yeah, the kids also all hit it off with each other. I don’t know why that is a parent’s greatest joy, but it is. I was just excited for the times when they did visit, which were full of laughs and whatnot. They were truly my best friends (well, at least Kevin and Nick were), which can be slightly depressing depending on how you view it. Sometimes, I see it as depressing simply because it sucks when you can’t see your best friends often. Other times, it’s the best; I can tell Kevin absolutely anything in the world and I can always text Nick when I want something to laugh at. I still didn’t have a regular way of communicating with Joe, though he occasionally slipped through the crevices. Nick would randomly text me a message saying that Joe said hi, even if we hadn’t been texting at all previously. He’d also scream hello whenever Kevin phoned me.

Then one night… he called me. I hadn‘t recognized the number, but I was used to being called from the random pay phone now and then, so I answered. “Hello?” I asked hesitantly.

“Hey, it’s Joe.”

My eyebrows furrowed together, he never called me. “Oh, hey? What’s up?”

“Kevin couldn’t call you tonight, so he told me to call instead. He didn’t want you to think he’d forgotten about you and he knew you were going to bed early because of a test tomorrow or something?” he asked, he sounded slightly confused, like he wasn’t sure of what he was saying.

“Oh yeah, thanks. It’s cool, tell him I said thanks and all that,” I said, my voice trailing.

“Well, uhm, yeah. I can do that.”

I sat up, so that my elbows were resting on my knees. This was one of the most awkward phone conversations I’d experienced in a long time. “Thanks, Joe?” It wasn’t a question, but my voice still did that weird tone raising thing that happens whenever I ask a question.

“Remember that day at the ice rink?”

“How could I forget? I still have a big bruise on my arm,” I said, laughing.

There was a pause on the line, “Thanks for that, Sadie. I really had fun, and it was cool doing something with someone one on one. I’m so used to doing things with my brothers all the time, so it was different. Thanks.”

“Thanks?” I replied, not knowing if that was really a compliment. “Whenever you need some one on one time, just ask, I’m willing to just chill or anything. I guess the whole me living in Texas thing and you living on a bus thing can kind of get in the way though.”

“Yeah, I guess, but I’ll take you up on that offer one day, don’t worry.”

“Right…” I said, not really knowing how to respond. I’m not usually one for talking on the phone anyway.

“I guess you should be going to sleep now?”

I glanced at my clock, 10:07. Not that late, but I did have a massive test first hour tomorrow, a little extra sleep wouldn’t hurt. “Yeah, probably.”

“Good luck on the test tomorrow!” he said, faking enthusiasm over a test. “Goodnight, Sadie.”

I smiled, as I slipped under my covers, reaching over to turn off my beside lamp. “Goodnight, Joe.”

“Oh, and Sadie?”

“Yes?” I asked, my eyes slowly closing as I rested my head against my pillow.

“Sweet dreams.” Click. A smile spread across my face as I turned my phone off, I always did after Kevin called. I snuggled deeper into his jacket, already drifting into my own dreams. Since my phone was off, I never knew Kevin called me for his usual conversation fifteen minutes later; or that he hadn’t told Joe to call me.

There was a concert in an hour, give or take. Nick had just recovered his own phone from Joe’s hands. Why did Joe need Nick’s phone when he had his own functional one? Instantly, he checked his outbox, the usual greeted him. “Joe says hi!” “Yeah, I’ll tell him you said hi, too!” And the last one, something Nick assumed Joe typed when he heard Nick walking down the hall, “I gotta go now, another show, bye!” Each sentence ended with an exclamation point; overboard with excitement anyone? Nick caught Joe with his phone more and more often and each time there was always a sent message to Sadie.

The door opened and Nick quickly looked up, expecting Joe to be back. It was Kevin instead. “Hey, Kevin, check this out,” he said, tossing the phone over with the “Joe says hi!” message opened.

Kevin rolled his eyes, “Why would you tell her Joe said hi?”

“That’s the thing,” Nick said, snatching his phone back, eager to look through more messages he had supposedly sent. “I didn’t.”

“Oh,” Kevin said simply, gazing across the room, as if trying to recall something. “When I called Sadie the other day she said something along the lines of ‘Thanks for getting Joe to call me since you weren’t able to,’ but I had no idea what she was talking about and it was really late, so I just agreed. But now… it makes sense?”

He flipped open his own phone and scrolled down to Sadie’s name, like that would offer some sort of clue. “Why can’t he just text her from his own phone then?”

Nick laughed, causing Kevin to send him a confused look. “Come on, Kevin, you’re an expert at analyzing the purpose for anything Sadie does in her life, do that with your own brother. Why do you think he wouldn’t text her from his own phone?”

Kevin glanced down at his phone again, “Uhm… it wouldn’t be as obvious, would it?”

“Right,” Nick agreed, knowing that if Joe truly liked her or thought he liked her, he’d be very tentative with displaying his feelings.

“Joe wouldn’t want to be obvious about this, because he doesn’t know Sadie well enough to gauge her reaction… or know anything about her really,” Kevin said. “So finding out how she reacts to subtle mentions of him will give him an inside look to her life.”

Nick nodded, scrolling through his inbox once more. “Still, I’d rather her like Joe than some random loser. At least, we’d actually know the guy.”

“We’d be able to make sure that he wouldn’t misuse her like the last one,” he said, honestly. The last one wasn’t pleasant for anyone. “But… we’re jumping the gun. We don’t even know if she likes him… we don’t even know if Joe likes her. Maybe he was just bored and wanted to talk to her or something. He’s never said anything about her directly and he hasn’t really gone out of his way to make a move or anything.” It was true, they could be jumping to conclusions. There was nothing wrong with Joe simply talking to Sadie, Nick and Kevin did that constantly.

“I guess we’ll see what happens next time we see her, huh?” Nick closed his phone and straightened himself into a laying position on the couch. He slowly closed his eyes, attempting to rest before the show began.

This would be something new, something they weren’t used to. It would be something odd, but also something they could easily become used to. Sadie needed a guy she could depend on and would always be there for her. Granted, she had that in Kevin as a best friend, but she needed someone else. And Joe… Joe needed someone that wouldn’t judge his crazy responses, someone he could just be himself around. Kevin closed his eyes, recounting the day at the mall, when he’d watched Joe help Sadie off the ice after she’d fallen. Somehow, he’d known, even then, that things were going to change.
